(Sigh) I usually make my bias strips by cutting the pieces and then stitching them all together. Tonight I decided to try the continuous bias from a square method. (It is detailed on the Fons and Porter laminated card on binding a quilt.) First I drew the lines parallel to the wrong edges. Then I had a hard time figuring out how to match the lines up. Then I some how got them off by a bit so my strip just got narrower. I think I made a mistake wanting to make it 1/4 inch thick when finished. (It needed to be thin because the letters I'm using the strip to make are pretty thin. ) Good thing I just bought more of the fabric this afternoon. Looks like I've got to start over again. I'll try this continuous bias thing one more time and then I'm going back to the tried and true of piecing them together individually.
Arlee here again--will dig out the foolproof article on making bias strips for you---will try to send tomorrow

Thanks Arlee! I'll try it again with these instructions in front of me to see if I do better. :>Here's an active link for anyone else who needs to get there to. ;>http://www.stitchguide.com/stitches/quilting_sewing/tips/p_cont_bias_bind.html

I so know what you mean. I tried to do the continuous bias on my wedding quilt this summer, and I flopped miserably. It was uneven and I had to give up on it. I just ended up sewing together bias pieces (I was so angry about the whole thing by the time I got to this, I honestly don't remember how I did it) and it looked the same as if I would have done the continous. I've got to figure out how to do it better next time.

Well I tried again. The instructions Arlee recomemnded helped because hte picture showed that when you joined hte two short sides into a tube it helps ig you press the seam allowance down on one side, then match the sides. I also used a little wider strip. Unfortuantley I didn't have a very large square piece left so I pieced together two rectangles and then proceeded with the directions. I decided to live with the weird seams instead of going out to buy yet more of the fabric. :> Tomorrow I'll try to lay it out and baste it down on to the quilt.
